Shared Ownership Unpacked Series 2: What happens after you buy?
Shared Ownership can sound simple enough on paper: buy a share of a home, pay rent on the rest, and potentially buy more over time. Then come the questions.
What will my monthly costs actually look like? What happens if I want to buy a bigger share of my home? Can I remortgage? And what happens when I eventually want to sell my Shared Ownership home?
That is exactly why we created the Shared Ownership Unpacked Podcast: to deep dive Shared Ownership and make the process easier to understand, without drowning in jargon.
Microsoft focused on helping prospective buyers understand the basics and navigate the buying process. Now, Series 2 is taking the conversation a step further. Rather than simply asking “How do I buy a Shared Ownership home?”, it explores “What's it actually like to own shares in one?”
So what happens after you get the keys?
Getting the keys is a pretty big moment, but it is not the end credits.
Series 2 looks at the questions that can become important once you are actually living in your home, including managing monthly costs, staircasing, remortgaging, selling and what happens when your life or circumstances change.
It also explores the realities of being a Shared Owner and the role housing associations can play throughout that journey. By understanding what happens beyond the initial purchase, we hope to make the whole process feel a lot less mysterious.
