The best outdoor spaces in and around Godalming

When it comes to finding a town with countryside charm, Godalming has it all, including a variety of options for those looking to enjoy the great outdoors. From peaceful parks to beautiful hiking trails there's something for everyone in this charming Surrey town.

Winkworth Arboretum

One of the most popular outdoor spots in the local area is the National Trust's Winkworth Arboretum. Located just outside of the town, this stunning garden features a wide variety of plants, flowers, and trees, as well as a lake and a number of walking trails. It's a perfect spot for a peaceful stroll or a picnic in the great outdoors.

It’s located just an eight-minute drive from our homes at Ockford Park.

Phillips Memorial Park

If you’re looking for a laid-back outdoor experience, Phillips Memorial Park ticks plenty of boxes. Set over 11 acres, this Green Flag Award-winning park takes in a riverside walk, as well as a conservation area and pond, ideal for nature lovers and a skate park for those looking for an adrenaline fix. Most interesting is the history of the park, which was named after a local resident who died on the RMS Titanic. Jack Phillips was a telegraphist on the ship, and the man who sent the morse code distress messages as the tragedy struck.

The park is little more than a 20-minute walk from Ockford Park.

Broadwater Park

Located in neighbouring Farncombe village, Broadwater Park is a beautiful, serene park covering approximately 30 acres. Its size makes it the ideal spot for a longer hike along one of the many footpaths that wind through the trees and shrubbery. Be sure to take in the gorgeous Broadwater Lake along your walk, and stop to refuel at the iconic waffle van, Waffles and Stuff. As the name suggests, delicious hot waffles are paired with barista coffee – a perfect reward for a brisk winter walk.

The car park is a 10 minute drive away from our Ockford Park development.

Witley and Milford Commons

If you’re looking to truly connect with nature, Witley and Milford Commons is a superb spot to really immerse yourself in the countryside. With its range of landscapes, from woodland to heathland, and its wide footpaths, it’s perfect for a slow stroll with friends, or a solo power-walk. For kids, the natural play trail is a wonderful way to climb, balance and let off some steam in a safe, and incredibly beautiful environment.

You can get to Witley and Milford Commons by car in less than 10 minutes from Ockford Park.

Hydon’s Ball

For those who don’t mind a bit of an incline, Hydon’s Ball is one of Surrey’s highest points, and wonderful vantage spot offering fantastic views over the nearby Surrey Hills. At the top of the 180m trail to the top of the hill sits a stone seat – a memorial to Octavia Hill, one of the founders of the National Trust. It’s a much needed resting point after an exhilarating walk.

Hydon’s Ball can be reached in around 12 minutes by car from Ockford Park.
