Things to Do in Sussex This August Bank Holiday Weekend

Summer's winding down (if someone could tell the sun that though that’d be great), but there's still plenty of time to make the most of it. If you're planning the perfect August Bank Holiday in Sussex, we've put together a guide to the very best ways to spend the long weekend.

Whether you're planning an August Bank Holiday in Brighton or spending your weekend in Shoreham-by-Sea, Sussex offers the perfect mix of coast, countryside and great attractions. From vineyard visits to live music, beach days to sunflower mazes, it's the kind of Bank Holiday weekend in Sussex that reminds you why living here makes sense.

For residents at Home X Brighton, Wharf Twenty One and Dock Makers Quarter in Shoreham-by-Sea, some of the best of things to do in Sussex are within easy reach. Whether you're considering Shared Ownership in Brighton, Shoreham-by-Sea or elsewhere in Sussex, these communities are perfectly placed to enjoy everything the county has to offer.

Here's what's on:

Sunflower Maize at Bignor Roman Villa

If you're after something a bit different, the Sunflower Maize at Bignor Roman Villa is well worth the trip. Set around the remains of a Roman villa, you can wander through fields of sunflowers, pick your own blooms for £1 a stem, and explore a piece of history while you're at it.

At £5 entry, with under 5s going free, it's a great option for families or anyone looking for a slower-paced day out surrounded by beautiful countryside, and it's perfect for capturing a few Instagram-worthy moments. The combination of ancient ruins and seasonal flowers gives it a unique feel, and it's only a 45-minute drive from Dock Makers Quarter and Wharf Twenty One. But be quick, the maize is only here for August!

Artelium Vineyard

Sussex has quietly become one of the best places in England for wine, and Artelium Vineyard is a perfect example of why. Located a 30 minute drive from Home X in Brighton, it's an ideal spot to spend an afternoon and raise a glass to the long weekend.

You can tour the vineyard, taste their award-winning sparkling wines, and soak up the views across the South Downs. It's relaxed, scenic, and a reminder that you don't need to travel far for something special.  Don’t have a designated driver? You can also catch a train, with the vineyard a short taxi from Burgess Hill Station.

Summer in Sussex at Amberley Museum

For families or anyone interested in local history, Amberley Museum is hosting its Summer in Sussex event over the Bank Holiday weekend. Set in a former chalk quarry, the museum preserves traditional crafts and the working heritage of the South of England.

This weekend, you'll find artisans, producers and creatives from across Sussex showcasing their work alongside the museum's regular exhibits. There's plenty to explore, from vintage transport to working demonstrations, and it's just 36 minutes by car from Dock Makers Quarter and Wharf Twenty One in Shoreham-by-Sea, or why not take the train.

Brighton Mod Weekender

If live music and late nights are more your thing, the Brighton Mod Weekender is back from 27th–30th August. Packed with club nights, DJs, and live performances, it's become a fixture of the August Bank Holiday calendar.

The energy is infectious, the music spans decades, and it all takes place just 15 minutes from Home X. Whether you're a longtime mod or just curious, it's a great way to experience Brighton's creative scene in full swing.

Hit the Beach

Both Brighton and Shoreham-by-Sea beaches can get busy over the Bank Holiday, with visitors travelling from across the country so you might want to avoid on the bank holiday. But if you live here, then the rest of summer is fair game!

Brighton's beachfront is lined with cafés, bars and the iconic pier, perfect for a full day out with plenty of options for food and entertainment. Shoreham-by-Sea offers something a bit calmer, with a more relaxed vibe, independent spots along the seafront, and views across to the harbour.

It's the perfect way to enjoy a Sussex coastal weekend, whether you're spending time with family, meeting friends or simply making the most of everything the area (and your lovely new home) has to offer.

Why Sussex Works
