A Guide to Charlton

A Guide to Charlton

Charlton, home to our Lime Works development, is a charming and picturesque neighbourhood in the Royal Borough of Greenwich, known for its rich maritime history, beautiful architecture and the spectacular views from the Royal Observatory at Greenwich Park.

Located in a popular pocket of Southeast London, Charlton has become increasingly sought-after over the years due to its friendly community, excellent transport links, and abundance of green spaces. Just a stone’s throw from Greenwich’s array of independent shops, cafes, restaurants, bars and the ever-popular Greenwich Market, residents can enjoy the ultimate blend of urban bustle and natural surroundings in the charming neighbourhood of Charlton.

In this guide, we will take you through some of the best local coffee shops, pubs, and restaurants, as well as some of the most beautiful parks and green spaces in Charlton and lively Greenwich, the latter of which is just 15 minutes away by bus from our Lime Works development.

Cafés:
If you're looking for a great cup of coffee, head to Greenwich Grind. Featuring sleek pink and marble interiors, coffee is the main focus here, but you can come for everything from all day brunch to delicious cocktails and a great playlist to take you into the evening. For a quick lunch in the park, locals love Heap’s Sausage Café for artisan sausage butties and local produce available for takeaway.

Another great spot right on your doorstep in Charlton Park is The Old Cottage Coffee Shop. Unfussy with a traditional British feel to it, the charming decor and comfortable seating invites you to stop for a tea, coffee or a wholesome bite to eat on your walk in the park.

Pubs:
The Bugle Horn is a traditional English pub located in Charlton village. It's a great place to go if you're looking for a cosy atmosphere and some good pub grub. The menu includes classic British comfort food like fish and chips, bangers and mash, and steak and ale pie, which you can enjoy inside or, during warmer months, on their outdoor terrace.

Another great pub in Charlton is The White Swan. This is a stylish gastropub that serves up modern British cuisine. The menu is full of delicious options, such as slow-cooked lamb shoulder, roast beef, and smoked haddock. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, making it the perfect place to unwind with a beer, good grub, and friends.

You’ll find a classic British pub on every corner in Greenwich, many with outdoor seating to watch the world go by. Worth the quick trip from Charlton is The Cutty Sark, a historic pub located near the famous ship of the same name. Found on a vibrant part of the river with lovely views, nestle into the comfy seats and enjoy a cosy atmosphere, delicious pub food (they’re known for their great fish and chips), and a thoughtful list of wines, beers and ales. Their Sunday roast is a local favourite not to be missed.

Restaurants:
Charlton has a fantastic range of restaurants, with even more to choose from in nearby foodie Greenwich. The Old Brewery, located in the historic Old Royal Naval College, offers a range of modern British dishes with a focus on locally sourced ingredients. The restaurant also has a microbrewery on site, so you can enjoy a pint of their own craft beer with your meal.

Charlton also has some fantastic South Asian cuisine, a standout option being the award-winning Indian restaurant, Kasturi. A sleek, family-run spot, dishes are authentic, fresh and some of the most delicious examples of Indian cuisine in the area.

For something more upmarket, head to Champagne + Fromage for a glass of fizz and some artisan cheeses from their 50-strong list. Or for burgers and beer there’s Rox Burger (including brilliant veggie versions) at Up the Creek comedy club.

Green Spaces:
Charlton and the wider Greenwich area are home to several beautiful green spaces to enhance the quality of life of lucky residents. Greenwich Park is undoubtedly the most famous in the area, and for good reason. This vast park offers stunning views of the city skyline, the River Thames, and many historic landmarks. One of the most popular attractions in the park is the Royal Observatory, which houses the Prime Meridian Line and the famous Greenwich Mean Time clock. Visitors can also explore the beautiful flower gardens, take a stroll through the tree-lined avenues, or enjoy a picnic on the open grassy spaces.

Also on the long list is Eltham Palace and Gardens, a hidden gem located just a short distance from Greenwich. This stunning park features an art deco mansion, a medieval moat, and lush gardens to explore. The palace itself is fascinating, with beautifully preserved interiors that give visitors a glimpse into the opulent lifestyles of the 1930s.

More local to Charlton itself is Charlton Park, which covers over 60 acres and has a range of facilities, including tennis courts, cricket pitches, playgrounds, and a skate park. A perfect location for events, it also hosts regular music concerts, family fun days, and outdoor theatre performances, as well as the famous Charlton and Woolwich Free Film Festival, which showcases a range of free films and documentaries throughout the park.
