Historic Sites To Visit In Guildford

With its picturesque 17th century surroundings and richly historical architecture, Guildford is hard to beat when it comes to heritage. With shared ownership in Guildford, you can spend your weekends exploring the historical landmarks that are sprinkled across the rural landscape. We’ve put together a list of Guildford’s most historic sites.

Guildford Castle

One of Guildford’s most famous beauty spots, Guildford Castle is thought to have been built by William the Conqueror shortly after the 1066 invasion of England. The grounds of Guildford Castle contain stunning seasonal flower displays, certain to add a dash of colour to your day, and thrill seekers can also climb to the top of its Great Tower for views of Guildford and beyond.

The Guildhall

The Guildford Guildhall is on the High Street and is a Grade I listed building. Steeped in history of the town, it was formerly a courtroom and council chamber. The ground floor of the Guildhall is of Tudor origin and contains preserved panelling. The front of the building features an iconic bracket clock made in 1683 which is a grand feature of Guildford High Street. It still remains a thriving part of the local community today.

Tunsgate Arch

One of Guildford's most famous landmarks, Tunsgate Arch stands halfway up Guildford High Street and was originally part of the Cornmarket. Its name originates from the Three Tuns Inn, which until 1818 stood on the site of the archway. Today, it provides a perfect place for a spot of shopping.

The Undercroft

The Undercroft, located on the High Street in Guildford, is a medieval undercroft which has been described as one of the finest examples of its type in the country. Dating from the end of the 13th century, it is thought to have been a merchant's shop back in its time and has stood as a Grade II listed building since 1976.

Hatchlands Park

Located just along the A246 from Guildford in East Clandon, Hatchlands Park is a red-brick country house surrounded by 400 acres of rolling parkland and woodland, noted as one of the largest country estates in the area. The green open spaces and ancient woodland at Hatchlands Park make it the perfect place to escape from the town for the day and be immersed in nature.

Guildford provides a quiet oasis of calm and a close community feel amongst the backdrop of the Kent countryside. Decorated in cottages and age-old pubs, there’s something undeniably romantic about Guildford and its beguiling character.
